Jury Nullification

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

The drug laws in Texas and most other states are ineffective at curbing drug use. These punitive laws have devastated families in mostly poor communities through long prison sentences and other draconian measures.

The legislatures have done very little to make the necessary changes to our drug laws. It's time to send the message to our legislative servants that it is past time to change the drug laws. This message needs to be sent through jury nullification.

Jury nullification is a great power that citizens can use to effect the necessary changes. Used throughout our history, jury nullification has been successful in changing unjust laws. From slavery to prohibition laws, citizens have risen up and effected change through this last resort action. It's time to reclaim this power to change our unjust drug laws. The states and federal government are wasting our monies incarcerating drug users and the traffickers who supply the drugs.

These funds could be put to better use in building up communities and having better access to mental health support. Drug addiction is a medical issue. The criminal justice system has never been the place to handle drug use and addiction. All illegal drugs should be decriminalized, and the funds used for law enforcement should be redirected to healthcare for addiction, mental health, and community enrichment.

It's time to end the "War on Drugs" and bring peace to our communities.
